The Thing That Happened

Third-person survival in the ruined city of Jericho.

What The Thing That Happened is

The Thing That Happened is an open-world, third-person action survival game set in Jericho, a city left in ruins after a catastrophe. You play Torque, a survivor who arrives in a ghost town of crumbling buildings and overgrown streets, where the few remaining people are trying to rebuild. It's a small project. The store page says it is made by two people and built in Unreal Engine 5.

The focus is more on action than base building. You collect and upgrade weapons with attachments, work through melee and combat skill trees, craft gear, find safe houses scattered around the city, and take on quests for the locals. The developer says the single-player game is the main experience. Co-op works on a local network, while online co-op needs a VPN tool like Hamachi or Radmin.

What happens in this series

The series opens with Jericho itself. Everything suggested the city was dead, and it wasn't, which makes the first episode the most-watched video in the series and one of the biggest on the channel. From there it's a steady climb in power: the first safe house and new skills, night runs for weapons, backpacks, a pistol that becomes surprisingly strong, and a sniper rifle that changes how fights go.

Along the way the series helps the locals with their problems, finds another safe house with better weapons and armour, and works through the quest list until the gear is nearly maxed out. The latest episode adds a car, which is great for getting around a city that big, as long as you know where you're going.

Where to start

Start with the first episode. The story is light, but your gear and skills carry from one episode to the next, so watching in order shows how a weak start turns into a well-armed survivor. Eight episodes so far.
